27 Sep It’s Hunger Action Month!
First established by Feeding America in 2008, Hunger Action Month was created to bring awareness to food insecurity across the country. For instance, you might not know that 1 in 8 children in the U.S. is at risk for hunger. Kids who don’t get enough to eat—especially during their first three years—begin life at a serious disadvantage. They’re more likely to be hospitalized and they face higher risks of health conditions like anemia and asthma. And as they grow up, kids who missed meals are more likely to have problems in school and other social situations.
You can help children and adults facing hunger in our community. Volunteer with us (see the article above), or donate food. A list of the items we need is available on our website. Right now, we’re especially low on:
rice
mashed potatoes
grits
oatmeal
cereal
canned pasta like SpaghettiOs or Chef Boyardee
broth
canned soup
