Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our mission is to partner with the community to address homelessness and hunger—one family at a time.   Homelessness and hunger do not discriminate, and we don’t either. We want everyone to feel like they belong and are important, no matter who they are or where they’re from. We want to make sure that everyone has a chance to be part of our community, no matter their background, beliefs, or challenges. We believe it’s up to us to create and encourage positive changes in our community. We are unwavering in our dedication to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Diversity

Family Promise Montco PA welcomes and appreciates the many different backgrounds and perspectives that come from each person’s unique culture and life situation. These differences can include where someone comes from, their race, their customs, who they love, how they express themselves, if they have any special needs, how old they are, what kind of job they have, their beliefs, where they live, and more.  We want to make sure our Family Promise community feels safe and respected. We work hard to stop any unfair treatment based on differences when we see it.  We also keep learning to understand and respect those differences better.

Equity

Family Promise Montco PA makes sure that everyone who seeks our assistance and those who work here are treated well and have as fair a chance as everyone else. We know that some people in our community haven’t had the same chances as others, so we try hard to find and get rid of anything that might stop them from being part of all that we do.

Inclusion

Family Promise Montco PA wants everyone who comes here – our clients, visitors, staff, board members, and volunteers, to feel valued and included. Inclusion means making sure we appreciate everyone in a way that helps us learn more about how people connect with each other. Family Promise provides a place where everyone can make an impact and be a part of the community. We want people we meet to feel like they are treated kindly and respectfully, get help when they need it, and feel seen and heard.

Social Justice

Family Promise Montco PA works to teach and support our clients, staff, board, and volunteers to think carefully about unfair systems and how they can be changed. We want to show how some systems aren’t fair to everyone and how this can make it harder for a person to have the same opportunities as others.

June 7, 2020, Statement on Racial Equity

The past few weeks have been a time of reflection for some, awakening for others, and reckoning for many more. As we mourn for the countless unwarranted deaths of Black citizens and grieve for the American ideals that we recognize as unachieved, we also pray—and take action—for a better future for us all.

The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery will not be in vain. Through their stories, we can recommit to learning about and more importantly to changing the systemic racism and injustice that have impacted Black communities in Montgomery County and throughout our country.

As we work toward ending homelessness and food insecurity, we must also promote equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our board and staff recognize the importance of dismantling racism, bias, and discrimination and we are committed to doing more.

The first step in creating change is education, so that we can understand the complexities of privilege and racism, as well as what we can do to create change. Check the list below in the coming days and weeks for links to books and other resources.

The second step is dialogue. We invite you to reach out to share your ideas and concerns as you work with us to address racism within ourselves and our community. We are here for you and our entire community as we make sense of and engage in this difficult time.
