Volunteer Spotlight

In August of 2020, our Community Engagement Manager, Sue Zomberg, got an email out of the blue from Elder Jeffrey Gale, of the Church of Latter Day Saints’ missionary program in eastern Montgomery County. Elder Gale was seeking volunteer opportunities for their growing mission presence in the region. This email could not have come at a better time: we were in the thick of the pandemic, everyone was social distancing, and volunteers were scarce.

Today—nearly three years, 34 volunteers, and more than 1,000 volunteer hours later—our LDS Elder partners have become mainstays of our volunteer program. They’ve moved furniture, sorted donations, cleaned our food pantry, painted, shoveled snow, stuffed envelopes, helped turn over apartments at Hope Gardens, and more. Any time we need strong shoulders, willing hands, and generous hearts, we know who to call. Thank you to each and every one of the Elders who have given their time to help us serve families in need.
