More than Shelter: A Volunteer’s Reflection

Volunteers in the Interfaith Hospitality Network play a vital role in fostering environments where kindness, connection, and compassion flourish. At Gwynedd Friends Meeting, that spirit was especially evident as three families were warmly welcomed through the Family Promise emergency shelter program. For H., a dedicated volunteer and member of Gwynedd Friends, the experience was profoundly moving. She found the act of hosting to be filled with heartfelt care and genuine connection, leaving a deep impression on her.

Reflecting on her time with the families, H. shared, “I’ve never felt anything so beautiful. Being there in person was completely different—it brought me to tears.” Her gratitude for the opportunity to connect was tangible as she added, “I’m thankful to be part of such a caring community. I feel sadness for their struggles but also hope for their future.” H.’s reflections serve as a powerful reminder that Family Promise is more than just a shelter—it’s a bridge of compassion, a source of hope, and a testament to the strength of community. Through the eyes of volunteers like H., we see how small acts of presence and empathy can leave a lasting impact.
