Become More Informed About Homelessness

Have you read the recently released 2024 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report to Congress from the U.S. Department of Housing and Development (HUD)?

This report provides a snapshot of homelessness in the United States based on data collected in January 2024.

Here are some key findings:

Overall Increase in Homelessness:
The report revealed an 18.1% increase in homelessness compared to the previous year, with more than 770,000 people experiencing homelessness on a single night.

Family Homelessness:
Family homelessness nationally saw a significant rise, increasing by 39.4%.

Montgomery County PA Homelessness
The Point in Time count found that 435 people were experiencing homelessness on the evening of January 23, up from 357 people in 2023.

Affordable Housing Shortage:
The report highlighted the ongoing affordable housing crisis, with median rent increasing by 18% since 2020 and a shortage of 7.3 million affordable rental homes.

The lack of affordable housing is a significant factor contributing to homelessness, as many individuals and families are unable to secure stable and affordable living conditions. This situation is exacerbated by rising housing costs and stagnant wages, making it increasingly difficult for low-income households to maintain their housing.
