Drew Rothman first became involved in helping with the food cupboard in 2015, when he was running for Abington Township Commissioner. “The thought of people going hungry pains me,” he said.
Last spring, Drew held what was probably the most unique Facebook fundraiser anyone has ever done for the cupboard.
It all started during lockdown, when he decided to grow his beard until he reached his goal to raise $3,000. (Here’s Drew with an update part way through.) Then it got even more interesting when he posted the following:
“Friends, we are looking to raise over $2,000 more for our local food cupboard via the ‘Drew Beard Challenge.’ This beard is a monster and your donation earns you a vote as to what I’m forced to shave it into on May 8. If you are able to help, please consider making a donation.” This began a series of experiments with various stages of beard removal–mutton chops, handlebar mustache, and more. In the end, he raised more than $6,100 to support the cupboard!
“With the hard work the cupboard does, my family is proud to do what we can to make that work just a little easier, and to help feed even one extra family,” said Drew. “No one should have to worry where their next meal will come from, and I encourage everyone to do what they can to help the cupboard in their wonderful efforts.”
